Just a general newby question, I know that my babies can go back
into their coop but, how do chickens cope in the rain? should i be
providing an area that is raised off the mud? or are they expected
to just go back into the coop if its raining too
much?...............................I can hear you all going,
Duhhh!!! but I just want to do right by my babies. :))

LOL no matter what you do for your chucks they will still stay out
in the rain & get wet through, I used to fasten mine in but
they used to create that much I had to let them out. Just leave
them to their own,& let them get on with it. I have old tree
branches in my run for them to jump up on if they want to.

Some breeds are better in the rain than others. Those with
feathered feet don't like getting mud up to their ankles, it can
get very clogged in the feathers and even cause foot infections.
Those without won't mind so much. Fluffy/downey feathered bird like
Orpingtons and Silkies, anything frizzled can get really soaked to
the skin easily and if its cold too, can get ill.
All birds (all animals kept outside) should have the option to get
out of the rain or sun eg the hen house or a feed shelter. Many
however will choose to get wet!!
We've had so little rain lately, its not until you see them out in
it, and watch the run turn to mud, that the questions come up!
