hi all!
just looking for some reassurance really i have noticed one of my
light sussex hens to be looking pale and lathargic. i dust and worm
them regularly and have checked her over and cant find any mites or
lice on her body but i am a bit worried. i dont think she has eaten
or drank anything today. my chickens are a bit independant and i
cant usually pick her up but today she just sat there once i had
got her out of the coop to which she has been in since i let them
out this morning at 7.30. does anyone have any ideas as to what
could be wrong with her?? i have seperated her from the others (13
others!! :~) ) in another coop just in case it could be contagious
but i would have thought the other chooks would be showing
symptoms???
i would appreciate any help!!! thanks

hi vikstix. she may have just eaten something that did not agree
with her,do they roam or are they in a run ? also my sussex arn,t
to keen on the sun when it is strong and hot like it has been the
last few day,s they are always looking for shade, maybe she.s a
bit drained, Keep an eye on her to see if she eat.s and drinks if
not you will need to take more action. G OOD LUCK,

Just a thought, I have got a lot of red mite in my shed at present,
have you checked yours as they feed at night on the hens but you
never see them on the hens. They will hide in cracks and crevices.
Hope she soon picks up.

thanks for your replies checked for mites and nothing present,
sprayed them today just in case but found her dead in the coop that
i had seperated her in to had a look at her and it looks as if she
was egg bound. i dont know how old she was because i rescued them
from someone i know who didnt look after them properly (when the y
arrived they had scaly leg, they were in quarantine for a few
weeks!!) they all roam in an area of electric fence which is about
12 m squared which i move round our 6 acre field.

Hi vixstix, should,nt worry to much as long as she is ok a part from
the sneeze, as you know cickens are pretty hardy and usually get
over minor ailments, maybe she just has a bit of something stuck in
her throat or nose, she should clear this herself. Just keep an eye
on her, She could have hay feever ! I know some horses suffer from
allergies from hay and straw! Let us know how it goes, Goodluck.
