Hi everyone, I am new to Poultry Talk. I would like to share some
of my frustrations here... I have been reading on chickens for the
past 4 years or so, I own 5 books, read them all and re-read it all
again, and yet still never bought a single chook as my old house's
garden was unsuitable. Since living in a new property with a large
garden, lately I've been really busy looking 0n-line and magazines
for new chickens to buy, for the first time this year! However I
can't believe how hard it is to source good quality chickens in
this area where I live (Cumbria). It is a large farming area and
yet I can't seem to find anything locally. Perhaps I'm looking in
the wrong places? Also I can't decide and pick on a final breed, I
have got 6 or so on my 'wish list' and NONE of them are available
in Cumbria... So I'm considering
the possibility of travelling further afield much to the dismay of
my husband. I would love to be proud owners of attractive/rare
chickens so it must all be worth it in the end... I hope so anyway!

hi rkiggins. you are on the right site here, you need to choose
which breed you would like to keep. Do you want them for egggs and
meat,do you want them as pets and to show them! once you have made
your choice you willl have no problem finding someone on here to
fix you up. no matter where you live, All the best let us know how
you get on.

Hi there, I went to visit a breeder who had over 40 different types
of chickens, he lived around 2.5 hours away from me. On arrival I
was impressed with his stock and how well looked after the chickens
were. He was extremely helpful too. I've finally made my choice to
have a mixed flock. He would hatch some chicks and put them
together ready for me to collect so they can get on well. Also by
the time I will collect them they will be around 8 - 11 weeks old,
he would be able to seperate hens from cockerels. I have ordered a
good bunch of hens - Lavender Pekins, Black Pekins, Silver Laced
Pekins, White and Black Silkie's, Buff Sussex and Brown Sussex
Bantams, a total of 10 birds. There will be a strange mix of eggs
by the time they are ready to lay, but mainly I liked the idea of
having them as pets. I'm really looking forward to getting them at
the end of June :-)
