Hello All,
I need a bit of help.
I let our 4 girls out this morning, and their feathers are looking
a bit mouldy/not shiny and healthy.
I noticed at the weekend that their coop had developed a bit of
mould on the inside, so we have put in more ventilation holes in
the hope this would help (house made of wood & creocoted). They
are cleaned out every day and are outside until dusk when they trot
back in for the night. They have access to dry mud for dust baths,
I had a look at the symptoms of Red Mite but nothing seems to fit.
Otherwise they seem perfectly happy.
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks

Hi i had that problem with my chickens and coop once too! I don't
know what the weather conditions are like there but the mouldy
looking feathers are because of the moisture they inquire when
roaming round out side! I too had added ventilation to my coop, it
seemed to help some! One day i just cleaned the coop as usual,
dusted the entire thing with Diatomatious Earth, and put the
original heat lamp that i used for them as chicks inside the coop,
It helped dry out the coop as well as the feathers on the chickens
when they went in for the night!
It rains most of the year here so i keep the heat lamp inside the
coop at all times, turning it off when it is warm or sunny! The
mould on the feathers like i said is due the the extra moisture
that they getting into whether it be from rain, due or muggy
conditions, maybe even sweat, but if you give them a dry coop to
go into with the heat lamp, they will be able to dry off quicker,
and there feathers will start to look better! it would also help
to dust them before you put them in the coop, the first time!
Hope this helps!
