Hi,, being very new to keeping poultry i wanted to try an inexpensive incy, so got one from ebay, it came with a duff bulb, but was a small thread 40watt non clear type. which i have been trying to replace, however the likes of homebase etc only now stock the energy saving bulbs, are these suiable for incy's or would the "save" be as heat requiring a higher rated bulb, i am led to believe that standard type bulbs are being phased out.

Hi Quacker
Have you tried the superstores like Asda / Sainsburys they still sell them they are used in some microwaves or ovens, low enegy bulbs are no good.

Thanks Gambler, our local asda only had clear one's but will try sainsburys t0morrow,
Just one more thing, i am curious to know about, It is recomended to keep chick's in the incy for 24hrs after hatching to dry off, is the proximity to the light bulb harmful to it's eye's,? as i know even a quick glance at a lit bulb afects mine, or is this a daft question.?

Hi there, they will be fine with the light bulb as long as they can't get near it and risk burning themselves. Much better to leave them there to dry off and give any other eggs chance to hatch before opening the incubator.
