Poorly chicks

I bought 3 Buff Sussex chicks a while ago and everything was fine. Last weekend I decided to shuffle the chicks around to give them more space and put these 3 into a different pen. 1 day later I lost the biggest of these chicks. I thought it might have got chilled as the pen was more open than the one it had been in. Now tonight I have noticed another one going the same way. It just looks hunched up with its eyes closed. When I picked it up it felt light. Can anyone give me any idea what could be going on.
Thanks Ginny

hi ginny, how are your chicks? i lost one yesterday, this morning another one was all hunched up, a bit wobbly, and didn't protest when i picked it up, i've taken it away from it's mum and put it under an electric hen 2 hrs later it's feeding and standing well, although it's wings are a bit droppy. there were 8 chicks so maybe as they're getting bigger some might be getting pushed out? have you tried heat?
regards debbie

Yes I put it under heat but still lost it and then I lost the other 2 with it later in the week. I am wondering if it is something transmitted by the wild birds as we are finding dead greenfinches in the garden which are supposed to be suffering with salmonella caught from pigeons, I think.

mmm, mine suvived thankfully, so sorry to hear about yours.
you could try diamateous earth, that kills all sorts, and is so safe to use,
but really only to maybe prevent rather than cure.Frown

Hi, i have only kept birds for 39 years, 3 years studying poultry and avian species at college 24 years in the poultry industry meat and egg management uk and canada. 10 years with HOMOEOPATHY and natural products. i make no medical claims. Always consult a vet. vets out of 7 years studying are lucky to do 6 weeks on birds, we use to get them through our college for 2 weeks. there are some great vets out there who specialise in avian species, power to their elbow. testimonies speak for themselves. happy to help. Keep it natural, always! www.allcreatureshealthcheck.com Colin. call anytime, i will call you back, save your phone bill!
