I keep my chicks under heat for about 4 to 6 weeks depending on the weather. After the first 3 weeks I start to raise the lamp a few inches a day. If the chicks move outside of the area of the heat source it means they are probably too hot and if they all clump together all the time it means they're cold. When they've lost their chick down they will be able to regulate their body heat and should be OK unless there is a very cold spell.
