Feel stupid asking this but what breed lays the eggs we buy at the supermarket ?

Not a stupid question! Supermarket chickens are hybrids,basically egg laying machines. The conditions they lay in are highly controlled with regard to light and temp to gain the maximum number of eggs from each hen over an 18mth period. At the time of their first moult they are disposed as they become unprofitable.
