I'm completely new to poultry keeping, in fact I don't have any yet. I am waiting for delivery of a coop/run and will be looking for some hens in the next week or so.
I'm interested in birds with colourful plumage as I use feathers in my work but mostly want something friendly and easy going.
Any tips and advice would be most welcome and any info on where I can buy hens local to me would be great. I live in South Petherton.
Thanks in advance.

Hello corvus,
I'm new here too, but it does seem to be a very friendly nice forum, bit quiet, but we'll soon change that!! LOL!
Bantam orpingtons are very friendly and laid back, and come in a whole range of lovely colours, but i wouldn't recommend the large ones unless you have a lot of space! Hope you've ordered at least three runs /coops, they are very addictive!

in agreement with jubilee!! bantam orpingtons are very friendly and docile!! mine just plod along and whenever you want you can just scoop them up for a lovely feathery cuddle Sealed.

i have a feeling that me and jubes are slightly biased as we both keep them haha.

just trying to think of any others that would be good!! depends what you are looking for... whether you want pure breeds or hybrids?

because i have some hybrids aswell and they are very nice little hens!! and good layers. that would probably be the only thing with orpingtons is they dont lay as consitently as a hybrid or say a maran. Our marans lay alot more than the orps and havea beautiful dark brown egg!! check out my pictures and you will see!!!

hope i have been kind of a help haha

hope you enjoy the forum xx

Thank you for the replies.
I found a local breeder and have done some reading (lots of reading) and I think that I will probably be buying Black Rocks (unless there's something really pretty instead)!
My hen house/run has already been upgraded from a 4 bird to a 6 bird but I'm still only going to buy 4 for now.
