Q: Do you have a minimum number that I must order? A: New York State requires a min of 6 birds per breed when purchasing day old birds and under 8 weeks old. Otherwise, there is no minimum number you must order. Our farm was built on our 1 bird, 3 bird, 6 bird purchases, so we would NEVER make you purchase a minimum. Q: Do you mail order your birds or ship your birds? A: ABSOLUTELY NOT! Our facility includes large incubators that hold 100's of eggs at a time to be able to hatch the quality, different breeds you desire. We believe that it is INHUMANE to purchase or sell and/or ship live poultry, wither it be day-old chicks, ducks, turkeys, or full grown. FACT: Did you know that when you ship a bird, it is ILLEGAL to ship a bird when it has already been given water and food? Well its true! Those birds do not get water or food for 2-3 from hatch, during transit, then to your house. So as we stand, WE WILL NEVER SHIP OUR BIRDS! Q: Do i need a permit for poultry? A: Regulations vary from state to state especially with game birds and turkeys. Be sure to check your local regulations.
Q: How many roosters do I need for my hens? A: If you are just wanting fresh eggs, you do not need roosters. If you are wanting to reproduce, we recommend about 1 male for every 10 hens. Some breeds may need more or less but the 1:10 is a good starting place.
Q: Can I mix my new babies with an existing
flock?
A: This
is not recommend. Poultry has a pecking order established within
it's flock and if you add babies they will become an immediate
target. You should wait until the new poultry reaches maturity to
mix them together. There may still be some pecking establishing
the new order, but it will be less of a factor.
We also
recommend introducing new poultry at night.
Q: What causes my poultry to peck?
A:
There are many things that cause poultry to peck. They are
naturally cannibalistic and many factors will bring out that
trait. Cannibalism will occur more often under crowded
conditions. You should make sure you are allowing plenty of room
for your poultry. Mature poultry needs 3 to 4 feet per bird. Be
sure your birds are receiving the right nutrients in their diet
and that they are not "bored". You might add some grass or
scratch grains to their diet. If the poultry does pick enough to
draw blood you should clean up the bird quickly. Once they taste
the blood they will go back for more. You may want to purchase
anti-pick lotion from your local feed store.
Q: When will my hens begin to lay?
A: Hens
will begin to lay at about 20 weeks of age. It does vary some
from breed to breed. You also need to be sure that your hens are
getting enough light. Poultry needs 14 hours or more of light per
day to lay efficiently. This means you will need to apply
artificial light during the winter
months.
Q: Can you ship chickens, ducks, bantams and turkeys all on the same order? A: As we explained above, A&J Farms DOES NOT SHIP POULTRY. Although we will try our best to hatch all on the same order. If this cannot be done we will inform you prior to your purchase, as well it will be marked on your receipt. Q: Can i pre-book my birds to guarantee you save them for me? A: Yes! We do require a 50% deposit to hold your birds at the time of sale. You may also pay in full so you dont have to worry about paying your bill upon pick up. Q: What are your payment options? A: We accept credit cards (Mastercard, Visa, Discover). We accept checks (We will only accept checks for deposits. We will not accept a check for payment at the time of pick up. You may choose to make a payment over the phone with your credit card or bring cash. If you are unsure about this please contact us and we will explain furthermore. Q: Are you NPIP Tested? A: Yes. A&J Farms is a leader in the area and committed to keeping avian diseases for entering NYS Flocks, as a result we members of the New York State National Poultry Association. |
