So do you buy eggs online (ebay and other sites)? what are your views on this? Do you trust sellers?

I have both sold and bought on ebay with mixed results. Of what I've bought I have had very little success and a lot of old eggs sent to me, you know the ones that look all transluscent and thin shelled (but that is the risk you take and I have Never left negative or neutral feedback on eggs as this is not fair to the seller as postage, temp, humi etc can affect the eggs so much in transit)
Have even had rotten ones sent which have leaked in the bator! Yuck! The eggs I have sold are mainly spares when bator is full or when I have enough chicks off that particular breed. I have had excellent success with most buyers having excellent hatch success. I always sell eggs which have proven fertile either at home or when I have given them to friends to try. I'd never sell anything untested as that's just asking for trouble. I never list eggs with high start bids as then the buyer decides how much they want to bid and not me. I think it is only fair, also if buyers want, they are welcome to come see the parent stock and what I have hatched at home, but only serious bidders as so many just want to case your premises and look to steal stock. Anyone who contacts me about my eggs is welcome to come view for themselves and this I think is important as buyers will be confident and often return for more eggs or even birds when they get good results. I only sell surplus eggs as it's such a shame to eat them, especially as we keep quite a few rarities which we would love to see more popular with more people breeding them.

Like anything there are positives and negatives of buying eggs online. I find forums tend to be the best places as you get to see lots of other peoples stock and do swaps, buy and sell for reasonable prices with other enthusiasts. Ebay can be hit and miss, there are some people on there who have exceptional stock and use it as it provides such a huge market. Always look carefully at the pics as I have seen birds that look nothing like the breed they are supposed to be. Even with photos, if you do not know the breeder you can't guarantee they are pics of their chooks. I wouldn't pay a lot on ebay but will happily give a seller a try, look at the quality of the birds and keep the contact if they are good.

Going through the post creates another risk. I have had good results however I avoid people who pack their eggs in poly boxes as they have a terrible effect on hatchability. With poly boxes if a box is dropped or stops suddenly there is no cushion so the inside of the egg hits the shell and often breaks the air sack. I have also sent packs of eggs to myself on several occasions (each time sending one in poly box and one packed using tissue paper and egg box inside another small box). The egg box always has far more fertile eggs in, infact the poly box gives terrible results on eggs that are otherwise showing close to 100% fertility.
