Attempted rape flight

Hello!

I know this is natural behaviour but we're so disturbed! I have 2 drakes and 4 call ducks - we had hoped that the uneven numbers would stop the gang attacks on the girls but it's not happened. This week we had to pull a drake off a duck who was being basically drowned and squealing - yes squealing :(

I just wondered if anyone had any bright ideas for reducing or stopping this behaviour? I don't want to see it at all and would be gutted to find our girls hurt through all this.

Thanks, Victoria

Yeah drakes do have the attendency to "rape" the girls. I must admitt this time of year that is a bit strange. I breed runners are the only way you can stop this behaviour is if you get the right ratio between boys and girls. I did have one drake to 3 girls but even then i had problems of the girl getting pinned down for well over 5 minutes. The only way to stop this is to increase the number of girls or get rid of one of your drakes. I know it not nice getting rid of drakes but it has to be done. I had to rehome 8 drakes last year as the problem gets out of control. The best thing you can do ever sell or rehome a drake as the problem is only going to get worse especially when it comes to spring next year or by in a couple more girls depends how much space or money you have.

I hope this helps

Regards

Hi Jake,

Thanks for your reply. Do you think that more girls would help? I thought that 2 boys to 4 girls would have been enough? :( Be sad to get rid of one of the drakes but it may go that way - as you say, not sure i can watch it get worse as spring comes round,

Vicky :)

Hi Vicky,

More girls would definatly help. Its depends what is best for you. Girls always will get pinned down and "raped". If the 2 boys to 4 girls are allready causing problems it will be ten times worse in the spring. This time a year should really be for the girls to recover and not taken advantage of.

Hope this helps,

Regards

Jake :)

Dear Vicky,

Getting extra girls will help but I honestly think that things will settle by next Spring, they will have sorted themselves into groupings. After all 2 to 1 are really quite good odds. I wish I had that many more Drakes to Ducks. Also if your 2 drakes were brought up together they will be quite distraught to be separated.

With the colder weather coming I think you'll find there will be a reduction in amorous activity for a while.

I'm sure that they will be fine.

Katy
