Turning eggs

I have a manual incubator, have hatched eggs, light sussex, vorwerk and seabrights, 1 out of six over the year, lost two light sussex, due to late deaths, three vorwerks and 4 seabrights to the same problem, eggs were cleaned by the previous owners (Ebay), I have now asked for eggs not to be cleaned, and have asked to pick eggs up so they don`t go through the post.

My question is; when do I start to turn? leave for 4-7 days

I have now built a Incubator from a beer refridgator (small type) 24 cans) have installed a hot/cold thermostat 240v with cooling fan, 125watt heater, 12 volt dc automatic motor for turning plus all bits for under £80.00, just need to buy a long slim water container, temp is 37.4 to 37.8 please hit me with your ideas or suggestions please.......

Regards Mark

Eggs not being cleaned may not help the situation, you collecting them is a good idea though.
Maybe try and source eggs from local, recommended breeders... That way you will have a better idea of what you are expecting as people have recommended them, and specialised breeders may have better quality birds which you can see, and so hopefully more chance of them being fertile.

You need to turn the eggs 3 times a day from the day you set them.
Put a O on the side and an X on the other side of the egg, in pencil. Each time you turn them, the other letter will face up - they are better turned one way and then back the other way, rather than turned all the way around round, so that you don't twist the inner chalaza.

The day you set them is day 0, stop turning and add some water to the tray on day 18, they should hatch on day 21 Smile

Also, humidity is affected by the surface area of the water, not the depth of it, so make sure you choose the right water container.
