Hi folks,
I was contemplating the idea to start breeding a small sellection
of various chickens i.e. Brahmas, Cochins, Orpingtons (about 10 -
15 Breeds in total), but unsure as to what to do with the number of
Cocks that would be produced? No doubt some could be sold on but
not all! So what do breeders do with surplus Cocks...... other than
cull them?
All advice welcomed.
John.

Often or not breeders cull them. Bigger breeders have 2 pens of the
same bird but with different blood lines. In a hatch often than not
their are same amount of girls than boys. The bigger breeders grow
the ofspring up seperatly and depending on numbers from the
different pens they sell them as breeding pairs or trios. This can
get confusing but it solves the problem of to many cockerels. The
best solution is breed small amounts and sell them as chicks. Or
even better just sell hatching eggs. I hope this helps.

Hi john, Not many people want cockerels, they may keep a few large
breeds for meat, you may get rid of a few buy selling your birds as
trio,s but mostly you will have to kill them. As the saying goes,
If you can,t dispatch them, Don,t hatch them. All the best.
