I came home from work yesterday and one of my Orpington bantams
eyes was closed and was swollen there was swelling around the
eye. There was no sign of any trauma around the eye or any
mucus. She seems generally ok ,there is a sand pit which she can
access could the sand cause an irritation ?

Be very cautious with inflamation in the eye. Microplasma is a new
infection that can kill your birds. Check for a rattleing in their
breating or snot in the nose. It is very common with the weather
changing, and is very contageous. A product called Tylan will
control Microplasma, it is only available from the vet, I would
suggest you take your bird in anyway. The eyes will inflame first
then the symptoms will become much worse, so you will want to act
fast.
I hope this has helped.
