Wing Clipping!

I just got a new hen for my soon to be sister in law, she wants
hens for her coop during the wedding.
I have heard that if you clip both wings they can still fly if
they flap harder. If I clip just one wing it is supposed to
through her off balance. But seeing as i haven't clipped wings
before, how close to the covert feathers do I clip?

Hi! momma hen, think of your girls wings as finger nails.you are
correct DON'T clip both.pick up your girl tuck her under your arm
holding her face forward with one wing free the other held tight to
your body.asumeing your right handed with your left hand spread the
wing out in to a fan.you will notice that the feathers close to her
body are shorter in length & as you will see they get longer as
you run your hand along the wing.the feathers you need to trim are
about 5 or six of the shorter ones close to her body NOT the long
ones father out. the ones that give lift are the shorter ones.you
really need someone to help you here with the triming take of about
"2 INCHES",no more than that as it's not needed for hens that only
have semi flight at the most.If you don't want to STRESS your girl
out too much & keep her calm from struggleing, try what my dad
taught me.put her head under the wing your not cutting then rock
her back & forth this puts her in a coma as she thinks it's
night time she will go limp while you
trim the back feathers.when your done just release her head &
she'll wake up with in secounds. happy trimming
