I have a chick that pipped and hatched today, The little chick hatched today on day 21 i have 8 others that were supposed to but there is no sign of them pipping or peeping!
Help! Could they hatch later even though they went in the same time as the hatched chick? Are they dead!
I don't want to open the incubator for fear that they might shrink rap in there shells, but if it comes time to take out the hatched chick and the others haven't pipped will they become shrink rapped anywho, thats to say if they are alive?
This is my first hatch so i am a bit worried!
I want to candle them so bad to see if they are still alive but i could risk shrink rapping and chilling the hatched chick!

Congratulations on your first hatch. Most of my silkies hatch at 21 days. But my dutch black booted hatch at around 22/23 days. It is always best to leave the chick in the hatcher for 24 hours, they can survive 24 hours without any water/food. After the 24 hours I would take the chick out and put her under a lamp in your brooder. If your other eggs haven't hatched after 23 days I would take them out. It does happen that you get dead in shell but I always crack open the eggs to see why it hadn't hatched. Sometimes they don't fully form with no reason at all. It can be very stressful incubating so I can sympathise with you. Let us know how you get on. Kind regards Jules

The first little peeper didn't make it and passed this afternoon, but another has pipped and is making slow progress. I can't stand leaving the dead one in, but if i take it out i risk losing another one! :( it's the hardest thing ever!

Stick with it Momma hen. Try not to keep checking, it will drive you mad!! Only look once an hour max! They don't seem to hatch at night (I have found) and sometimes pip then sleep all night then hatch in the morning. Also the first to pip aren't always the first to hatch.
